Comprehension Strategy
Check for Understanding

Checking for understanding is an important part of the learning process. Teachers must account for the background knowledge that students bring into the classroom and how it will influence their overall comprehension of what is read. Unless teachers continually check for understanding, it is difficult to know exactly what the students have retained (learned) from the text.

Good readers check for understanding several times during the reading process. Students, who are not self-regulated learners, may not be aware of what they do or do not understand. When readers check for understanding, it helps to identify errors, misconceptions, and increase comprehension. Remember to encourage the students to use this strategy when they read independently.
