Comprehension Strategy
Ask Questions Through the Reading Process

To increase student comprehension, skilled readers should ask themselves questions before, during, and after they read. You can assist students to become more proficient by modeling this process and participating in think-aloud activities. Remember to encourage the students to use this strategy when they read independently.

Being a successful reader is not simply a mechanical process of decoding text; it is a process of active inquiry. Students who are good readers approach any text with questions. They will develop new questions as they read.
